Data Security Awareness Training Course

In simple terms, data security is the practice of keeping data protected from corruption and unauthorised access. The focus behind data security is to ensure privacy while protecting personal or corporate data.

Data is the raw form of information stored in a database, network servers and personal computers, or indeed on paper.  This may be a wide range of information from personal files and intellectual property to market analytics and details intended to be top secret.

However, some of this information isn't intended to leave the system.

The unauthorised access of this data could lead to numerous problems for the larger corporations and their customers.

Issues around data confidentiality and privacy are under greater focus than ever before as internet access exposes critical corporate data and personal information to new security threats.

An important challenge of data security is also represented by the insider threat, that is, data misuses by individuals who have access to data for carrying on their organisational functions, and thus possess the necessary authorizations to access proprietary or sensitive data. (The term proprietary data is used to describe data that is owned by an individual or organisation, which is deemed important enough that it gives competitive advantage that individual or organisation).

Protection against insider threats requires control over sensitive data and usually detection systems, able to detect unusual patterns of data access, and data user surveillance systems, able to monitor user actions and habits in cyber space – for example whether a data user is active on social networks, revealing sensitive information.

A company should consider data security for both physical forms of data storage such as hardcopies and data stored networks.

One of the best ways to protect data security is to enlist the assistance of your employees as the first line of defence in safeguarding company assets and mitigating security risks.
